Taking your team to its first soccer tournament: a coach’s checklist
Updated October 25, 2026
A first tournament is a big day for a young team: new opponents, lots of games, a medal at the end. Most of what makes it go well happens before you arrive. This checklist covers the weeks before, the morning and the day itself.
Choose the right tournament
For a first event, pick one close to home, in the right age group and format, with guaranteed games for every team and no early elimination. The guide to choosing a tournament explains what to look for, and the directory lists events near you.
Four to six weeks before
- Enter and pay, and keep the confirmation.
- Tell parents the date, venue, arrival time and cost, and ask who can come and who can drive.
- Confirm your squad size with the rules: how many players you can name and roll on and off.
- Check your club approves the trip and that all players are registered with the club.
The week before
- Send parents the timetable, the address, parking and what to bring.
- Plan playing time so every child gets a fair share across the day.
- Pack the bag: pinnies, balls, cones, a first-aid kit, spare uniform and a team sheet with emergency contacts.
- Share the plan for meeting up, and a phone number for the day.
On the day
Arrive early enough to find your field, register and warm up without rushing. Between games, find a base out of the weather, keep players fed and drinking water, and keep them together — a tournament site is big and busy. Check the timetable after every game: fields change and matches run late.
Keep it a good day
Young players remember whether they had fun and played a lot, not the score. Praise effort, rotate positions, and talk with the team afterwards about one thing they did well. Thank the referees and the organizers on the way out.
Common questions
How many players should I bring to a tournament?
Enough for rolling substitutions without anyone sitting out for long — usually two to four more than the number on the field. Check the tournament’s squad limit.
What should a coach bring to a soccer tournament?
Team sheet with emergency contacts, first-aid kit, pinnies, balls, cones, spare uniform, water, and the timetable — printed, in case there is no signal.
